The iconic Scottish Malts completes its biennial cycle and returns in 2023 for its 18th running. In recent years, the ‘Malts’ has established itself as a firm favourite with both new and experienced crews so with a return to Gleneagles for both start and finish venues, we expect a strong demand for entries. For those who are unfamiliar with the event, crews can expect to mix some of the best driving roads that Scotland has to offer, along with stunning scenery and visits to many of the distilleries that are dotted around this unique country. Along the way we will also take in other special locations to help make the event even more memorable.
This year’s event will see crews travelling in a more or less clockwise direction as we venture into some less familiar territory to take in areas like the Mid Argyll and parts of both Wester and Easter Ross. Of course, we will also be visiting some of the more traditional ‘Malts’ areas as well, so places like The Great Glen, Spey Valley and The Cairngorm Mountains also form part of the itinerary. Competition will be varied and set at an introductory level while still providing entertainment and excitement for the more experienced.
NOTE: While the Scottish Malts 2023 visits numerous distilleries, HERO-ERA Events do not condone drinking and driving. If it is established that either crew member has been consuming alcohol between the first and last Time Controls of a day, then in line with HERO Standard Regulations, the crew will be excluded from the event.

Pre event formalities will take place from mid morning in and around the Gleneagles Hotel. With proceedings scheduled to be completed by early afternoon, crews will be able to attend the Novice Briefing Session or simply relax and take advantage of the facilities available at the hotel.
From our base at Gleneagles we set out west and before long the first distillery visit of the day will be underway. Distillery based Time Controls and Passage Checks are a unique hallmark of the Scottish Malts and this will be first of many as the route takes crews through the wonderful scenery and roads the area has to offer while visiting individual distillers. Today we will circle south of Loch Lomond before heading into the wilds for a scenic lunch and arriving at our overnight halt in the historic town of Oban, the gateway to the Hebridean Isles.
Departing from Oban allows us to explore some of the best of roads that the west of Scotland has to offer. We will commence the day with an interesting and wind swept test venue, before more regularities and another test in a distillery yard. After lunch, the route heads into the Great Glen and onwards to Loch Ness before our halt and the first of two nights in the Capital of the Highlands, Inverness.
Basing ourselves in Inverness for two nights enables everyone to push out into unfamiliar territory known as the ‘Northern Loop’. Todays route will see us travelling back west before looping around to the north east to visit the Moray Firth area. We conclude the day by returning via the Black Isle to Inverness where crews will have a free night to explore the many different venues that Inverness has to offer.
Thursday is ‘Distillery Day’ as today’s route sees us heading into more familiar ‘Malts’ territory. Crews will travel into the Spey Valley for several distillery visits and tests before pushing on into the Cairngorms and passing through several locations that will be familiar to anyone who has ever listened to the winter travel news. Lunch is planned at a memorable ‘top end’ location before we take in the stunning views from The Cairnwell and circle back into Pitlochry for our penultimate evening halt.
Our final day will see us exploring the Tay Forest Park before heading into Strathmore and looping around Perth. We will return to Gleneagles via the Ochil Hills for a mid afternoon finish where those that have made it all the way, will be presented with a unique Malt themed Finishers Award. A ceremonial finish, complete with piper then follows before the traditional post event celebrations commence.
