HERO ERA to implement comprehensive environmental policy

31 Jan 2020

HERO ERA Chairman Tomas de Vargas Machuca is delighted to announce that HERO ERA is committing to making their events carbon neutral, with the ultimate aim of becoming carbon negative with a comprehensive plan to offset emissions. With establishment work beginning this year followed by implementation later in 2020 – HERO ERA will be the first organisation in their sector to do so.

World’s foremost historic rally company to team up with successful global forestry company to negate all event related emissions

Plans to build up an accurate database of historic car emissions

A commitment to plant trees responsibly and sustainably

The Plan in its simplest form is to offset what the estimated HERO ERA event carbon emissions are through the process of planting trees, teaming up with one of the most successful global investment forestry companies, Timberland Investment Resources LLP Europe (later, TIR). They will implement a professionally managed tree growth program with the aim of reaching negative emission figures.

Planting the trees themselves is the easy bit. But in true HERO ERA style, the company will go further, to ensure that the trees that end up in the ground, do so in a safe place where their growth will be maintained and nurtured, ensuring that the new trees continue to contribute to the planet’s breathing in the long-term, as well as helping to maintain and grow healthy ecosystems for all manner of flora and fauna.

On average, TIR plants around 1,100 trees in one hectare. This one hectare is absorbing approximately 16 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) and emitting roughly 16 tonnes of oxygen across a one year period.

HERO ERA will attempt to register its emissions produced from its travel, flights, route reconnaissance trips and of course its events and calculate together with TIR what is needed to offset these emissions. However, whilst retrieving data for modern methods of transportation is relatively easy, Hero ERA will try to create a new methodology that accounts for the impact of the hundreds of historic cars that take part in its events around the globe. Group chairman Tomas de Vargas Machuca had this to say:

“Working out what we need to offset for modern vehicles is easy, but we want to know the true impact of the historic cars that take part in our events and for this, there isn’t much data available. Using the latest Vehicle Emissions Testing Equipment, we pledge to build up a database of classic and vintage vehicle emissions, by adding emissions measurements into our scrutineering checks, thus, over-time building up a clear and accurate picture of the real impact on the environment. That way we will be as precise as possible with our carbon offsetting activities.”

Additionally, HERO ERA can take this further by working alongside organizations such as FIVA and MSUK. By exploiting their far reaching connections with classic motorists, it will be possible to build up an extensive database of vintage and classic car emissions, made freely available to all, to ensure knowledge is shared in the fight against climate change. Conclusively, the goal is it to be linking into the wider world of motorsport with the FIA.

A detailed plan of action will be revealed in September, when HERO ERA also hopes to move into their new central premises at Bicester Heritage, outlining the intricacies of exactly how the company will offset their impact on the environment and becoming a leading light in their sector in the fight against climate change.
