What an incredible event that has been. We have seen the lead change at every time control and those that have been leading slide down the order through bad luck or costly mistakes.
The drama went on until the final regularity of the event over Druidale where Paul Crosby / Ali Procter got caught in local traffic and dropped quite a few seconds in penalties and into the clutches of David Morgan / Richard Crozier who had a bad day by their standards. Looking at the results and despite being held up it had been a superb performance from Crosby / Procter with just one minute in penalties all day, this could have been seconds without the Druidale penalties.
The one thing that didn't change was the outstanding performance from John Abel / Mark Appleton, a fine 1:15 day's tally against the 1:53 posted from Geoff Hall / Martyn Taylor meant that their provisional winning margin was 1:58, a good win by anybody's standards.
There will be a full report posted by Monday evening, detailed results will be live later today.
HERO would like to thank all the Marshals, Officials, Residents of the Isle of Man and the many Manx Car Clubs who have assisted with the event, without your hard work and help the event could not have run. Thank You.
Regularity one, Marine Drive has really piled on the pressure with a few crews buckling under the heat. Following on directly after the first driving test, Marine was a six timing point monster with one of the most challenging junctions on the event to ensure precise navigation was adhered to. Richard Isherwood / Ian Canavan fell foul to an easy to miss white that was hidden by a railway bridge, the ensuing lost time costing them a maximum minute for this timing point. A further 27 seconds were lost on the final timing point by the pair and they thought their joint seventh was over. Due to mechanical issues, their nearest rivals, Nick & Andy Pullan had clocked out of the time control this morning and gone to seek parts / assistance on the Island. We haven't seen them yet at Jurby but are hopeful to see them later in the day.
Regularity two took in Druidale heading north, this was a straight run with minimal input needed from the navigator but it caught out David Stanley / Bernard Northmore as well as Andy Johnson / Tony Jolly, both crews managing to amass over 40 seconds in penalties over the three timing points.
The class of the day has once again been Abel / Appleton who have amassed 55 seconds for this leg with Hall / Taylor in second with 1:01, Abel leads Hall now by 1 minute 26 seconds and the event, it would appear, is theirs to lose.
This will be the last live report from the event until after the finish, we will be streaming live, weather permitting, from Pit Lane at 14:50 onwards.
The Three Legs of Mann threw up several changes again last night with a TC Section that spanned four parts, 31 Time Controls, 36 Passage Controls and a secret check / DSO that caught out 17 crews on the night.
The main story overnight centred around the first part of the TC section at Jurby Airfield, several crews found the section disorienting and struggled to find their way around, the more noticeable ones included Howard Warren / Nick Bloxham, Stephen Owens / Ian Mitchell and Geoff Hall / Martyn Taylor. The airfield is a barren and bleak place with very few features to use as reference points, couple this with drifting fog banks and the wind and rain from Stella and you had the perfect storm.
Jurby has been a mainstay of the event and after (eventually) heading away from the airfield, the action came thick and fast, the flat, open expanses of the north gave way to more mountain like terrain that took in some of the classic Manx rallying roads such as Tholt-e-Will, Druidale and crossed over Cronk-y-Voddy straight before the first 'breather' at Peel. Several crews were OTL here after losing time at Jurby and cut part of the route to stay in the event, there was no relenting as the next section had a little bit of everything to keep the crews going. Starting from Glen Maye and using South Barrule and Archallagan Plantations, the event used the mid-part of the Island with its steep banked lanes and intricate system of inland roads, there was even a good 2 Km plus section of 'White' road thrown in for good measure as well as the forestry sections mentioned.
After almost three hours of continuous action the weary crews made it back to Douglas, some a lot earlier than others with Matt Warren / Ryan Pickering having run out of fuel, Bron Burrell / Seren & Elise Whyte had mechanical issues causing the Maxi to burn oil and vent some of it into the cockpit leaving the crew nauseous, the car cutting out some 400 yards from the final control both ailing mechanically and also out of fuel.
Outstanding displays on the night came from John Abel / Mark Appleton, Richard Isherwood / Ian Canavan, David Morgan / Richard Crozier, Kevin Haselden / Bart den Hartog and father and son team, Nick and Andy Pullan. These performances and some slip-ups by previously leading crews changed things around immeasurably.
We are now at Jurby Airfield waiting for crews and to catch up with the morning's action.
We are hearing that the TC section tonight has really thrown the cat amongst the pigeons and we believe that one of the leading crews has missed a code board. Furthermore, there have been two crews that ran out of petrol which will impact even further on results.
Leaving Creg-ny-Baa behind, Three Legs of Mann headed north west via Conrhenny Plantation, Glen Roy and Baldhoon before end of reg at Milnorca, this was a taster of a lengthier reg that wound its way alongside The Dreem, Ballaterson, The Hibernian and touching on the Mountain Course with a timing point at Gooseneck before descending past Water Works to finish of regularity at The Hairpin. A short run took the event to reg three at Dhoor where the terrain is a lot flatter but the twisting lanes are still testing enough to keep the competitors on the go.
A full update will be live on Saturday morning around 10:30.
Regularity 1/7, Dog Kennels, has been quite pivotal in the events proceedings, Paul Crosby / Ali Procter have been snapping at the heels of Matt Warren / Ryan Pickering and a mis-read of the route by the Escort crew has cost them dearly. Crosby / Procter now lead fur and squarely after collaring Warren / Pickering and have hounded them into 12th place. Ready to pounce are Howard Warren / Nick Bloxham in second with John Abel / Mark Appleton in third, John is still smarting after the recent Tour of Cheshire and it seems he is really getting to grips with the Mk1 Escort he has purchased recently.
Lower down the table there are some superb drives coming from relatively new competitors; Richard Isherwood / Ian Canavan are lying in a fine tenth place in their Nissan Stanza, the experience and cool-headed nature of Canavan rubbing off on Isherwood in his first international regularity event. The mighty Jaguar XJ-S of Ed Abbott / Andrew Duerden makes a formidable sight on the nadgery lanes of the Isle of Man, they lie 3rd in class and joint 14th overall. Peter Lovett / Rob Henchoz are having a stormer in their exceedingly rapid Porsche 911, Peter has grown in confidence over the last few events and is setting some extremely quick times on the driving tests.
The next update will be early tomorrow morning as we go into the night time TC section, first cars are due in at 23:00 with the last due in just before midnight. We should have some updated results before midnight which will cover the crews up to the start of the TC section.
Well, that has been a real afternoon of turnarounds!
Firstly, can we pass thanks on to Matthew Carter Motors of Ballasala on behalf of Stephen Johnson / Richard Dix. After their double puncture on Mansell's Mountain, the Escort duo took the offending wheels to Matthew who GAVE them two tyres as he is a rallying man himself. A fantastic gesture, but it has gone in vain as the Escort has cried 'no more' with terminal engine failure. It seems the Three Legs of Mann is testing the mechanical fitness of quite a few cars as the Austin-Healey Sprite of Andrew & Caroline Hamer has lost drive with an apparent half-shaft failure.
The woes of Steve & Julia Robertson continue with their MG BGT V8 losing their windscreen wipers for the majority of the day, not helpful with the torrential rain we are experiencing here on the Island. Leaving Jurby airfield behind and heading over the TT Mountain Course the final regularity of the daylight section took place to the north east of Onchan. Named Dog Kennels, the innocuous looking route instructions called for snappy navigating and the drivers not to poodle along... Some of the crews found the section a bit wuff and it was the time for navigators to take the lead and the drivers not to get hot under the collar...
The instructions were presented in a series of approach and departs with the second approach causing some consternation for the crews. An easy to overlook slot in Baldrine led to a white that ran parallel to the Manx Electric Railway before emerging on to the A11, the rest of the five instructions were very straight-forward, the sting being some text that several navigators missed. This text took crews into Conrhenny Plantation where use of an aerial shot of the woods to navigate by led to costly mistakes from Warren / Pickering, Carnegie / Bosdet and David Stanley / Bernard Northmore. It will be interesting to see how this affects the results.
Paul Crosby / Ali Procter have blasted through the pack to take joint lead with Dermot Carnegie / Paul Bosdet after the Escort mounted pair are deemed to have hit a cone on one of the tests here at Jurby Airfield. The weather is foul with gale-force winds and driving rain making conditions difficult, some crews are struggling with standing water and windscreens misting up due to the inclement weather.
The roads this afternoon have been classic Manx lanes - narrow, steep sided and undulating strips of tarmac with tight bends to keep crews on their toes. Steve & Julia Robertson are having a hard time with their MG BGT V8, the clutch has been slipping from the first regularity and the usually flamboyant Steve is having to take it steady to try and finish the event. Bron Burrell is having fun in her Austin Maxi, nicknamed 'Puff', but a stall on one of the driving tests saw navigators, Seren and Elise Whyte have to get out and push the stricken vehicle. An approaching car on the test saw the sisters dive for cover; unfortunately the cover was a thorny Gorse bush which provided a soft but prickly landing..
Results up soon, last few cars coming into the control.
Carnegie / Bosdet storm Mansell's Mountain whilst Graham Walker / Sean Toohey have taken a 'batterying' as their Lotus Elan battery explodes in the boot.
PROVISIONAL TOP FIVE
1)Wilson / Vokes
2)Carnegie / Bosdet
3) Warren / Bloxham
4)Crosby / Procter
5)Lovett / Henchoz
Richard Crozier and Andy Pullan are locked in a battle of the navigators with Crozier holding the upper hand by one second. They are the only navigators with single-digit penalties up to lunch.
The Bricknell's join us at lunch, their VW Golf GTi has had fuel issues and the fault remains a mystery despite the best efforts of the HERO Assist crews to locate it. Whilst coasting down a hill to get to morning coffee the fuel pump started to run again, keeping them in the event.
Stephen Johnson / Richard Dix suffer a double puncture on Mansell's Mountain and only have one spare on board, they are currently stranded there in their Mark 1 RS 2000 awaiting assistance.
Good morning from a very wet and windy Isle of Man. At 09:16, Chas Colton / Richard Bestwick lead crews away from the TT Pit Lane on Glencrutchery Road and into the first driving test to the rear of Grandstand. There were a couple of none-starters, the previously mentioned Simon & Niall Frost in their Clan Crusader and Trevor Lindfoot / William Calvert who didn't come to the Island despite entering the event in a Lancia Fulvia HF.
The first two tests were placed close together using the tarmac roads to the rear and side of the Grandstand, the rain overnight making the surfaces incredibly slippy. Dermot Carnegie / Paul Bosdet were inch perfect in placing their Mk1 Ford Escort through the cones and Dermot's past experience in Rallycross and autotesting was evident as he rocketed through the test in an estimated 47 seconds, four seconds in front of Matt Warren / Ryan Pickering in their similar car. Roger & Thomas Bricknell also have mechanical issues and are reported as broken down but have the Assist
Unconfirmed reports are coming in that the Hillman Avenger of Phil Cheek / Chris Rhodes has missed the first regularity section with mechanical issues, Roger & Thomas Bricknell are reported as broken down but also have the Assist team with them. Geoff Hall / Martyn Taylor suffered a puncture at the end of the Niarbyl test, the end of the test coinciding with the start of a regularity section, costing them dearly in terms of penalties.
We're awaiting cars at lunch now, this is the first card collect and once the morning scores are calculated we will post them.
Good Afternoon from the Isle of Man where we are waiting for the majority of competitors to arrive on the Island by ferry this evening. Scrutineering starts at 16:30 here at the TT Grandstand with the ferry expected to dock at around 17:30 - 18:00. We have had a beautiful start to the day but as Storm Stella approaches the wind is picking up and there is heavy rainfall here on The Island.
We will be streaming live footage from scrutineering and will be catching up on some news and gossip with the crews. There have been a couple of crew / entry changes over the last 24 hours; Brian Goff was unable to navigate for Roger Powley this weekend due to business commitments - Brian has handed the seat over to Roger's son, Leigh, this will be a very strong pairing in the yellow Porsche 911. This has been an up and down couple of weeks for Leigh as his original ride in Stuart Anderson's Bentley was curtailed with engine woes after the recent Tour of Cheshire.
It's not all wine and roses for another father and son pairing - Simon & Niall Frost as their Clan Crusader developed an issue with the Wills ring and flooded number one cylinder with water. Sportingly, the pair have offered to come and marshal on the event and we are looking forward to welcoming them onto The Island in more modern machinery.
The event is designed to be very competitive and with the help of the local motor clubs the route and tests are going to be a real test of crew and machine. There are several forestry-based sections of route along with some old (and very well-known) favourites here on Ellan Vannin.
We'll be bringing you live coverage and updates via this webpage and Facebook / Twitter, we hope to be able to stream live footage to this website for the very first time. Visit the site or Facebook tonight between 17:30 and 18:00 to view tonight's scrutineering.
